Radio in the East Riding over the Years

16th January 2023 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

By Mr Peter Wilson

About the talk:

My talk will start from the early days of radio broadcasting in the 1920s, will include local radio and offshore commercial radio, and will bring matters up to date with the development of digital radio, both DAB and online broadcasting, as well as the arrival of small-scale DAB here on the Yorkshire coast in 2023.

About the speaker:

I read textiles at Leeds University (1963-66) before working in the wool textile, publishing, and radio industries. My interest in radio started in the 1960s listening to offshore radio and then, while working in textiles, I broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds. I lobbied Parliament prior to the 1990 Broadcasting Act while working for the publishing company, Macmillan. I was one of the founders of Harrogate’s Stray FM, including being the first station manager, before programming Zambia’s Radio Christian Voice.  I am now “officially” retired but I still have an interest in both Christian radio and local radio, as well as being the compiler of the list of DAB radio services in the annual “Radio Listener’s Guide”.
