William Wilberforce

24th October 2022 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

About the talk:

Born to privilege and wealth in Hull, a diminutive ‘shrimp turned into a whale’ (Boswell), the brilliant and eccentric reforming philanthropist and MP William Wilberforce dedicated his life to a wide-ranging series of causes and lived to see Britain abolish the despicable slave trade he had campaigned against for so long. His was a complex and often contradictory character, which emerges in his public and personal life, as well as in the beliefs and causes he espoused.

About the speaker:

Scarborough-born Tim Tubbs was educated at Ripon Cathedral Choir School, Eton College and Oxford University, before working in the London theatre for 25 years, returning in 2008 to Scarborough, where he is semi-retired, cares for an elderly parent, is active as performer, producer and director in local community music and theatre, and gives frequent lectures and talks locally.
