A Nostalgic Wander through Bridlington

The Prior, Bro John Walker, led members and guests on a nostalgic wander through Bridlington. He showed about 150 historic photographs from his extensive collection and told the stories they evoked.

Bro John’s beloved Old Town and High Street and its characters featured strongly, such as the fierce misses Edmunds’ sweet shop, Holtby’s vehicle showroom, and Cranswicks Yard where an early courtroom stood. Also Alfred Lake, whose shop sold clay pipes.  He lost an arm in the final days of World War One.

Bro John showed many photos from the rest of Bridlington too including early King Street with cobbles and gas lamps, and later with cars parked. The earliest photo probably dated from 1860 showing the eroding cliff before the Princes Parade was built.  People who featured included Anthony Waites the market bell man, Goosey Wilson and his pet goose, and the three coal merchant Nicholls brothers and their horse Captain.

The Vote of Thanks was given by Bro Rick Hudson.
