AGM 2023 and Bridlington in 1973

The last meeting of the season comprised the AGM followed by a talk by the Scribe Bro Garry Sunley about Bridlington in the year 1973.

The AGM confirmed that Prior Bro John Walker and the Sub-Prior Michelle Stephens are to continue into the second year of their two year appointments. The positions of other officers and the enthusiastic Chapter members were also confirmed.  The Scribe was pleased to report that membership had increased by 10% and is approaching 70.

The AGM concluded, Bro Garry revealed memory stirring facts about the year 1973.  Many today may be surprised to hear that inflation reached 14% and mortgage rates 8%. A 22 inch colour TV would cost £1900 in today’s money, so it is not surprising that most people rented. The first ever mobile phone call was made and personal computers were still a few years away.

Bro Garry revealed that in Bridlington, 1973 was the year the Well Lane bypass opened, and Carnaby airfield had its first industrial unit whilst still being used for Club 66 motor racing. There were exciting rumours of a car factory to be built there. A new swimming pool was opened, and plans were passed for a multi-story car park on the Palace car park site.

Bro Garry also took a tour around the town’s shops and businesses which were flourishing at that time. For example he said you could buy your scooter at Austin and Doran, your car at Kennings Garage in Prospect Street, and your photographic supplies from Mansley’s Camera Centre on Regent Terrace. A quick review of the town’s manufacturers followed, such as the PMG Thorpe “nodding dog” factory.
