Country House Connections

Many of the East Riding’s fine country houses are connected by family inheritance and marriage. Bro Keith Kaye introduced the packed room to these sometimes colourful and sometimes tragic intertwining lives.

During his research Keith realised the halls at Howsham near York, Wassand near Hornsea, and Boynton, all linked to the Constable family with origins at the now ruined Flamborough castle.

Keith investigated the lives of the owners of these properties through time revealing how in the Georgian period the Stricklands of Boynton married into the Wassand based Constable family; and also the Cholmley family, who owned Howsham Hall and had interests in Whitby.

Eventually the Stricklands inherited all three properties. By the late Victorian period the Stricklands owned a massive 20,000 acres in the East Riding.

Bringing us up to date on all these properties, Keith included why Richard and Sally Marriott regained the ownership of Boynton Hall.  The Marriotts are descendants of the Stricklands.

There is an Augustinian link too. Local Architect and past Augustinian member Francis Johnson had worked on all three properties.
