Hull White City

Michelle and Alan Beale told the story of Hull’s “White City”, a public pleasure park which followed the “White City” model found in other cities including the London 1908 Olympic Games venue. Although a big hit with the public, it proved to be a precarious financial venture.

A quartet of investors bought Eastella Hall and grounds in 1919. The speakers detailed how financial problems led to Lord Terrington being the sole owner by 1923 and the forced sale to new owners in 1928.

The speakers described the attractions offered. They included tennis courts, an indoor skating rink, and a concert hall with a resident orchestra. Motor cycle dirt track racing was very popular. Bertram Mills circus visited. Boxing and wrestling tournaments took place.

Tragedy struck in 1938 when one of the buildings burned down after the fire appliances were held up at a level crossing. The war then ended the dream.
