Members’ Evening 2023

There were five short presentations from members.  They ranged from a Lancashire poem to celebrations of characters with local connections.

Bro Martin Wallace reviewed his convoluted research into an elusive visit by Benny Hill to Bridlington. On the way he revealed that both he and Benny attended, and hated, the same school, and confirmed Benny did become a milkman with his pal Ernie.

Bro Keith Kaye told the story of Bridlington’s larger than life Director of Tourism Brian Myford who died in 2021. Keith showed how Brian tirelessly and successfully endeavoured to change the aging face of Bridlington’s entertainment offerings by attracting the country’s best acts.

Gillian Pudsey told us about Miss Duggleby’s  Devonshire House private school on Wellington Road, which once imposed “character training” on its pupils.  Gillian’s mother attended and hated it, although others praised it.  She described the school in detail and hockey on the beach.

Bro Harry Houldsworth recited a Lancashire dialect poem written in the 1880’s. It considered the “haves and have not’s” in society at the time, concluding that many a dutiful working man is far happier than a king.

Finally, our Prior Bro John Walker paid a tribute to George Hardwick. A founder Augustinian, he was well known as a fun lover, often playing fools or jesters in the society’s theatrical performances.  He was also known for his poems and humorous stories written in the local dialect. Bro John read an example to the clear enjoyment of those present.
