Five members gave short presentations after which guest Gordon Meredith explained how he was gathering information for Bridlington’s potential bid to be the UK’s “Town of Culture”.
Last week’s talk mentioned the tragic death of airman George Whitman in WW2. Gill Pudsey was able to confirm from personal knowledge how his widow Muriel put her life back together.
Bro David Moore showed convincing evidence that John Ogilby’s 1670’s route maps, in particular the London to Flamborough Head map, could be linked to Charles II’s early problems with parliament.
Chris Gatenby compared the 1796 “Diary of a Farmer’s Wife” to later farm life, particularly in butter making. We hear that back then, “Men be very tiresome sometimes”.
Maureen Bell urged us all to be thankful for the NHS by comparing medieval health care to today’s practices. But even today there is still a place for leeches and honey poultices.
Bro Robert Amos declared that, “Everybody here has history”. His own recent DNA test revealed his ancestors included a drunken wheelwright and stage entertainer Will B Merry.
The Scribe thanked everyone for their contributions.
