David F Walford gave an enthusiastic talk about the history of railways, particularly those in East Yorkshire. He covered the early engineering challenges, the revolution in travel that resulted, and the political and commercial shenanigans that continue to this day.
David explained in some detail why he held the early railway pioneers such as Brunel and the Stephensons in high regard.
He then explained how the rapid expansion of the system revolutionised transport. The speed and ease of moving goods and people improved hugely, and those who often had never even visited the next town were suddenly travelling more widely.
David covered the development, justifications, and demise of railways in the East Riding. He thought that despite the increase in passenger numbers this century, more could be done if those involved were cajoled to operate in a more flexible way.
David’s knowledgeable talk triggered a particularly lively question and answer session. It seems we all view the railways with both affection and frustration.
