A Report on our meeting held on 19th January 2026
Members enjoyed an entertaining talk about the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club given by Steve Stanton, an active member for 60 years.
Steve gave key dates in the history of the club from its founding in Hull in 1847 and relocation to Bridlington about 60 years later up to the present day.
His love of boats was clear as he talked about the boat classes associated with the club including the elegant Yorkshire One Designs of 1898 still going strong.
Steve extolled the benefits of Bridlington for pleasure sailing with its large safe sheltered bay. He thinks a large all-tide access marina would be well used and would bring wealth to the town. For now, he sees the growth in small boat sailing from Wilsthorpe as a positive for the club.
Steve admitted to being “bonkers about the sea” and amused members with the story of how he joined RYYC and how his activities developed. He emphasised the strong camaraderie within the club, and the national and worldwide race successes and adventures some members have enjoyed.
The vote of thanks was given by Peter Crooks.
