The East Riding Archives

Archivist Hannah Stamp outlined the history of the East Riding archiving service and the various forms the records take.  She went on to describe how the records can be accessed and gave Bridlington examples of the types of records available.

She explained how the climate controlled archive has expanded from 3,000 records in 1953 to more than 450,000 now, all catalogued online. The earliest document is about 900 years old.

Hannah then led an entertaining tour of some of the types of records available including parish, court, deed, and charity documents. She also showed maps, drawings of ships and buildings, and historic photographs.

Hannah says the primary goals of preservation and public access will be more challenging in the fast changing digital age.  As an architect of the internet said, “The 21st century could be lost in a digital black hole”.
