The talk on the history of Spurn Point from Bro Fred Walkington MBE was a story well researched with lots of unique photographs and personal insights.
Bro Fred spoke about the erosion of this slender spit of land which was not helped by boats taking away sand for building purposes in the 1800’s.
Spurn was perhaps best known as the remotest lifeboat station with the crew and families living on site. Bro Fred delighted us with a detailed history from personal connections and photographs. There was a lifeboat on Spurn from 1810 until 2023.
Bro Fred gave a history of the military presence which took off in WW1 with the Spurn Fort at the tip and the Goodwin battery at the north end and a railway connecting the two.
Bro Fred reviewed the long history of the lighthouses and short history of the Coastguard and Humber Pilot bases. He said that now all military and maritime activities have ended, nature has taken over Spurn and it is now managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
The vote of thanks was given by Bro Geoff Bellamy.
