The Skipsea Landscape Project

The archaeology around Skipsea Castle holds exciting prospects. A six year project to investigate has now started. Dr Elaine from the University of York showed the findings and explained their plans for the future.

The Norman Skipsea Castle is highly unusual in that the mound on which it was built already existed. Elaine explained that coring work has proved this. Finds show occupation in the area from the Neolithic period onwards.

Elaine’s team explored Round Hill a little to the north.  They found the edge of one of many meres near the castle and Neolithic and bronze age artefacts.  One beautiful find preserved in the peat was a delicate dragonfly wing.

At an ancient enclosure called Sparrow Croft just east of the castle, finds included pieces of wattle and daub, and also two rows of six large postholes. The age and purpose of the posts is something Elaine hopes to resolve as work progresses.
